So, what is Knob and Tube Wiring
Knob and Tube wiring was used to wire houses before around 1930 and Knob and Tube wiring has separated hot and neutral wires and does not have a ground which you definitely want to have in case of a fault situation were to occur, therefore many insurance companies won’t cover those homeowners.
…and you can’t have insulation around knob and tube wires because they need air space in order to dissipate heat.
Most knob and tube wiring was protected by fuses also instead of breakers and because more people buy more appliances that have higher amperage draws that would blow the fuses and then take out the 15 or 20 amp fuses and replace them with bigger 30 amp fuses. Then that would cause the wires to heat up and would then compromise the insulation causing it to begin breaking down.
With that being said, the best time to replace knob and tube wiring is as soon as possible, for you and your loved ones safety and peace of mind., also, for the resale value of your home.
